More about tongue tie
What is tongue tie?
Tongue tie, also known as ankyloglossia, is a condition present from birth where the small piece of tissue under the tongue (the lingual frenulum) is short, tight, or positioned in a way that restricts movement. When the tongue can’t lift, extend, or move freely, it may affect how a baby feeds.
Some babies show a heart‑shaped tongue tip when they try to lift it, while others have a restriction that is less visible but still impacts function.
Tongue tie varies widely. Some babies have a thin, stretchy frenulum, while others have a thicker or more fibrous one. What matters most is how the tongue moves, not just how the frenulum looks.Types of tongue tie
Tongue ties can look and behave differently from one baby to another. Clinicians assess both appearance and function.
- Anterior tongue tie — The frenulum is easy to see and attaches close to the tongue tip. The tongue may look heart‑shaped when lifted.
- Posterior or submucosal tongue tie — The restriction sits deeper under the tongue and may not be visible at first glance. Even though it is less obvious, it can still limit movement.
- Variations in thickness and elasticity — Some frenula are thin and flexible, while others are thicker or more fibrous, which can create more restriction.
Different services may use slightly different terminology, but the key focus is always on how well the tongue can move for feeding. What is tongue tie division?
A tongue tie division (also called a frenulotomy) is a quick, simple procedure that releases the restrictive frenulum to improve tongue movement. It is usually recommended when a tongue‑tie is clearly affecting feeding.
The procedure involves a small, precise snip of the tight tissue. It takes only a few seconds, and babies can usually feed straight afterwards. Feeding immediately helps comfort the baby and allows them to begin using their improved tongue mobility right away.
